Follow-up letter from Councilor Deans
Received this past week regarding community issues.
Dear Neighbour,
I am writing to update you on the progress of completing the action items that were agreed upon since our community safety meeting on April 26, 2010. Over the last month and a half, I have been working hard with City staff to complete these action items in order to improve the safety in our community. Below you will find updates pertaining to each of the action items that were listed in my last e-mail to you.
1. The establishment of a Solera Subdivision Neighbourhood Watch Program and request for a walk around the community with Constable Gary McCoy.
UPDATE:
On May 30, 2010 and June 2, 2010, Constable Gary McCoy sent out an e-mail with information on initiating a Neighbourhood Watch Program and the Crime Prevention Ottawa Toolkit to the Solera residents who provided their contact information to him at the community safety meeting. Constable McCoy recently advised my office that there was not an interest in the community to start a Neighbourhood Watch Program, and therefore, he has closed his file on this issue.
Constable McCoy also attended the June 2nd Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) audit with City staff and 6 Solera residents (see item 5).
Residents are still welcome to contact Constable McCoy should they have any community safety concerns or questions at 613-236-1222 ext. 6556.
2. Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) Marlin Private development update.
UPDATE:
OCH held a follow-up safety meeting with the Marlin Private community in May 2010 and invited the Ottawa Police and Women’s Initiatives for Safer Environments (WISE). Community Safety Officers will continue to carry out proactive patrolling in the community and engage tenants when encountered onsite. During the meeting, tenants expressed an interest in starting a Tenants Association and will use an upcoming BBQ event as a kick-off for this process.
OCH has advised that the tenancy related to the firearms incident has been removed from the community and all tenant complaints are being followed up within a 24-hour period.
In addition, a major capital works project commenced at the Marlin Private development on June 15, 2010 and includes, exterior grading work, fence replacement and some siding.
Residents are still encouraged to report maintenance issues on OCH property by calling the 24-hour/7 day a week maintenance and security number at 613-731-1182.
3. City Forestry to meet onsite with Solera residents to identify dead brush and trees and conduct a general clean-up in the area.
UPDATE:
On May 11, 2010, Forestry Services and the Parks Maintenance Branch conducted a preliminary investigation of the site, and placed a work order to remove 10 dead elm trees from the woodlot.
Forestry Services attended the June 2nd CPTED audit to look into further maintenance and improvements to the area.
Residents interested in participating in additional tree planting projects should contact Julie Jackson at 613-580-2424 ext. 14786 or Julie.Jackson@ottawa.ca
4. Community mailbox off its support.
UPDATE:
My office contacted Canada Post and the community mailbox was repaired on June 4, 2010.
5. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) audit, clean-up of Solera Park, and the issue of skateboarders using the Solera Subdivision as an access way into the adjacent park and pathway system.
UPDATE:
On June 2, 2010 at 8:00 a.m., a CPTED audit was conducted at the Solera Subdivision. In attendance was Patrick Legault from Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services, Julie Jackson from Forestry Services, Constable Gary McCoy from Ottawa Police Services, Chuck Wheatley from Parks Maintenance Branch, Daniel Raymond from Development Inspections and Beverly Munn from my office, in addition to 6 residents from the Solera Subdivision community.
Please find attached the summary and recommendations from the CPTED audit, which was prepared by Patrick Legault. I have requested that we receive a timeline of when the recommendations will be completed, and have been advised by Mr. Legault that an additional update will be provided in two weeks time, which I will share with you. In the interim, I am pleased to advise that recommendation 4 on page 4 of the CPTED audit summary (tree, branch and shrub trimming) has been completed.
I will continue to keep you updated on the progress of the above action items.
My office and I are always available to provide you with assistance on issues affecting our community. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at 613-580-2480 or Diane.Deans@ottawa.ca
Kind regards,

We were out walking the other day and noticed that:
ReplyDelete1. Larco cleared the areas next to the pathway. (Seems to me the city said they would “finish” it – or maybe Larco is to do it)
2. The tall grass/weeds on the berm to the east of the pathway from Solera have been cleared
3. The trees to the west and east of the pathway from Solera have been cut back to about 7-8 feet.
